I’m curious, what exactly makes emergency braking systems autonomous as opposed to “automatic” or “active” emergency braking systems? What would it take for Active Lane Keep Assist to become Autonomous Lane Keeping?

Most likely the ability for the system to be turned off.

An autonomous system would be assumed to be in effect at all times. Active lane keeping can be turned off and certainly has some issues with robustness (no lines, rain, etc).

Just like Autopilot isn’t autonomous driving.
